In 1939, Alex Steinweiss was employed at Columbia Records as the first art director for the firm and decided to spruce up and repackage vinyl records. We all know the result, album cover art has turn out to be an crucial component of music and pop culture. (Prior to Steinweiss’s creative influences, records were usually stored in plain, undecorated packaging)
For collectors, album cover art can sometimes be as useful as the vinyl record it holds. For instance, one of the most famous album covers of all time, the Beatles “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” cover was one of the most inventive at the time and included cut out inserts and lyrics. The price 1 would pay for a copy of this album is influenced by no matter whether or not it has the original contents and they are intact.

I believe a very excellent argument can be made that 1967 produced the greatest music in the history of popular music up to this point (early 2009.) These seven albums I would use as my evidence if I was presenting such an argument. Maybe that is specifically the argument I am presenting? Amazingly 4 of the seven albums I’m which includes in my list are debut albums by some of the most legendary bands in history of rock music. I feel that is a excellent indication of just what a breakthrough year 1967 really was. Who are those 4 bands? Pink Floyd (who were known as The Pink Floyd at the time), The Velvet Underground, The Doors, and The Jimi Hendrix Experience. Pretty wonderful, is not it? These wonderful albums are listed by their title alphabetically. It was tough enough to choose just seven “must hear” albums from 1967 (as there are surely more than that) so I wasn’t about to attempt and order them in any way other than by the

Norman Smith was 1 of the true “unsung heroes” of the Beatles’ story — he rarely gets a mention in any of the biographies, yet his work was an crucial part of their sound, as was that of other EMI engineers like Geoff Emerick, Ken Scott, Chris Thomas and Phil McDonald. In the last year or two, Emerick has drawn some attention, thanks to his recent memoirs, but “Regular” Smith has largely been left out of the limelight.
IN JUNE 1962, recording engineer Norman Smith was assigned to a test recording by an unknown Liverpool group for EMI’s Parlophone label. “Go and pick up George from the canteen,” stated Smith to tape operator Chris Neal following hearing the demo, “and see what he thinks of this.”

Around 1910, 78 rpm records replaced phonograph cylinder as the medium for recorded sound. The 78 rpm records were issued in both 10″ and 12″ diameter sizes and had been typically sold separately, in brown paper or cardboard sleeves that were occasionally plain and occasionally printed to show the producer or the retailer’s name. Normally the sleeves had a circular cutout permitting the record label to be seen. Records could be laid on a shelf horizontally or stood upright on an edge, but simply because of their fragility, several broke in storage.
German record organization Odeon pioneered the “album” in 1909 when it released the “Nutcracker Suite” by Tchaikovsky on 4 double-sided discs in a specially-created

With the renewed interest in vinyl records, an old friend is becoming far more critical once again- album cover art. There have been tens of thousands of album covers produced throughout the years and there are some that are instantly recognized, although some remain obscure, but one thing is specific, album cover art is portion of our pop culture and the rock and roll lexicon.

Let’s explore a especially innovative British art style business that specialized in producing immediately recognizable album cover- Hipgnosis. This creative group has produced album covers for some of rock’s dignitaries, including Pink Floyd, Genesis, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Yes and the Scorpions, to name a couple of.
