Then there are those that will make you feel hopeful about death. The following is a list of the best 10 rock songs that will surely depress you if you feel the blues are creeping up to you.

1. Lover, You Really should Have Come Over by Jeff Buckley

The song is brilliant and Jeff Buckley’s voice is beautiful, to say the least. Nevertheless, the lyrics are so depressing that you will want to kill your self just before the song ends. It is a fairly song which mixes breakup with a breakdown and talks a lot about loneliness.

2. Comfortably Numb by Pink Floyd
Pink Floyd is known to have produced some of the greatest songs ever and this one is not an exception. If you come out alive following listening to Lover, You Ought to Have Come More than, make certain you listen to the lyrics of this song which talk about having an unresponsive and indifferent attitude towards the world.

three. Decades by Joy Division

The truth that Ian Curtis had unmistakable suicidal tendencies becomes apparent in this song. The lyrics talk about how ‘we’ knocked on hell’s doors and forced ‘ourselves’ in. It is fairly a breaking taking ode to suicide.

4. Yes by Manic Street Preachers
This song is laced with every depressing theme you can believe of- mutilation, annihilation, alienation and deprecation. Richey James Edward was clearly emotionally unstable and the truth that he disappeared with out a trace in 1995 makes it effortless to recognize why he wrote such mind-numbingly depressing lyrics.
5. Stella Was A Diver And She Was Constantly Down by Interpol
When this song was released, it became clear that the band was a portion of the ‘goth pop’ genre. The lyrics centre about a woman who is stuck in a dark society and how she drowns herself to make it end. The atmosphere surrounding the song is dark and depressing enough to make you want to cry your self to sleep.
6. Sober by Tool
The lyrics talk about how “I’ will only end up ruining ‘your’ life simply because ‘I’ am a liar and will break ‘your’ trust eventually. The guitar shrieks via the song and Maynard Keenan initially whispers but is practically pleading for mercy by the end just like you will.
7. One Hundred Years by The Remedy
The Cure is recognized to generate self-loathing songs but this one takes the cake. Its standard aim is to give you an anxiety attack if you take place to think about the future. The singer screams about how it is perfectly okay if we all die. If you listen to this song, make certain that sharp objects are not kept inside close proximity.
8. I Know It is Over by The Smiths
Morrissey sings about teenage angst mixed with teenage really like all via this song. The song goes on for six minutes which is lengthy sufficient for the listener to make a pact with himself to by no means get involved with somebody else due to the fact maybe he’ll get rejected.
9. Heroin by The Velvet Underground
Beauty ideas on the web
Hair removal suggestions
girlsupdate
This song is about a person’s downward spiral into drug addiction. Make sure you are near a sink if you listen to this song due to the fact you will throw up.
10. And All That Could Have Been by Nine Inch Nails
This song’s music is so enthralling that you will locate your self getting transported to hell and back. Composed by Trent Reznor, this song will lure you towards itself only to throw you back out. Just what we want, proper?

History There are many patents dating back from 1906 when Edmund Sohlberg of Kansas City. The lantern used a carbon-arc bulb and was operated not by motors or any form of electronics, but by cords that were operated manually to control pan, tilt and zoom.

1925 saw the first use of electrical motors being used to move the fixture, and with it the beam position, by Herbet F.King. Patent number: 1,680,685. In 1936 patent number 2,054,224 was granted to a similar device, but where the pan and tilt were controlled by means of joystick as opposed to switches. From this point on until 1969, various other inventors made similar lights and improved on the technology, but with no major breakthroughs.

During this period, Centuary Lighting (now Strand) started retailing such units specially made to order, retro fitted onto any of their existing lanterns up to 750 watts to control pan and tilt.

George Izenour made the next breakthrough in 1969 with the first ever fixture to use a mirror on the end of a ellipsoidal to redirect the beam of light remotely. In 1969 Jules Fisher, from Casa Manana area theatre in Texas saw the invention and use of 12 PAR 64 lanterns with 120watt, 12volts lamps fitted, 360 degrees of pan and 270 degrees of tilt, a standard that lasted util the 1990s. This lamp was also known as the ‘Mac-Spot’

In Bristol, 1968 progress was also being made, mainly for use in live music. Peter Wynne Wilson refers to the use of 1kw profiles, with slides onto which gobos printed, inserted from a reel just like on a slide projector. The fixtures also had an iris, a multiple coloured gel wheel. These lights were also fitted with mirrors and made for a impressive light show for a Pink Floyd Gig in London. Another fixture known as the ‘Cycklops’ was also used for music in the USA, although it was very limited in terms of capabilities with only pan and tilt functions and at 1.2meters long and weighing in at 97kg including the ballest, they were heavy and cumbersome.

In 1980 after the invention of Dichronic colour filters by Jim Bornhurst in early 1980 the dawn of the VariLite moving head became reality, starting with the VL0, demonstrated to Genisis in the summer. It also used one of the first lighting desks with a digital core and this enabled lighting states to be programed in. The demo to Genusis compromised of the VL0 hung in the centre of an old barn. Changing colour and moving from one corner of the room to another, the four executed steps were simple, but impressive to anyone who had not seen the technology before.

Genisis was later to order 55 VLO1′s to use in their next chain of gigs across the UK. The lights were supplied with a VL series 100 console which had 32 channels , five 1802 processors and a dramatic improvement of the first console which was very simple, had an external processing unit. The VL1 also demonstrated the first ever use of a XLR cable in a lighting-control application, though DMX was never sent through it.

In 1985 the first ever moving head was produced by Summa Technologies to use the DMX protocoll, which at the time was rare and was among many other formatts including DIN8, AMX, D54 and the protocols other companies such as Tasco, VariLite, High End and Coemar were producing. It also looked recognisable, a fixture that wouldn’t look out of place in a theatre. The Summa HTI had a 150watt HTI bulb, 2 colour wheels, a Gobo wheel, a mechanical dimmer and zoom functions. For the time, they had packed more features into it than anybody else before.

In 1987 ClayPacky began producing the first recognisable scanner, the Golden Scan. It utilised stepper motors instead of servos and used a HMI 575 lamp, bright and with a far more uniform beam brightness. Tbis was followed by the Intellabeam in 1989, also realsed by High End, who, at the time were the Distributors for Clay Paky and Belliveau.

In the 1990s the future came closer with Martin, a Danish Company producing Fog Machines. They manufactured a line of scanners known as the Roboscans, with a variety of different specs for different users. Their range started with the 218, for the small venue and went up in brightness and features through 518, 812, 918 and 1200Pro units. Martin also invented a whole new range of Moving Heads including the Mac250, the Mac250+, Mac300, Mac500, Mac600, Mac700, Mac1200 and more recently the Mac2000 and MacIII. Martin Mac’s are popular in most rental situations and are also a great compromise between the cheaper manufactured products and the top end luminaires such as a High End DL2.

The future promises many great things as the concept of digital lighting, a bright LCD or DLP projector mounted in a yoke or moving head type fixture with an integrated media server will allow for millions of colour choices, endless libraries of gobos, image and video projections to take place. The DL1 and DL2 by High End Systems (Barco) and Publitec Beamover.

Features

Several intelligent lights in use at a concert. Note the white beams they produce

An automated light, properly called a luminaire, fixture (or sometimes moving head), is a versatile and multi-function instrument designed to replace multiple conventional, non-moving lights. Depending on the venue and application, automated luminaires can be a versatile and economical addition to a stock of traditional lights because, with proper programming, they can swiftly alter many aspects of their optics, changing the ersonality of the light very quickly. Lighting is typically pre-programmed and played back using only simple commands, although moving heads can be controlled ive if the operator is sufficiently experienced.

Most moving heads have all or some of the features, each feature is set to a channel number, such as this:

Pan

Tilt

Fine Pan

Fine Tilt

Dimmer

Shutter

Gobo1 Select

Gobo1 Rotation

Gobo2 Select

Gobo2 Rotation

Gobo3 Select

Colour1

Cyan

Magenta

Yellow

Prism 3,5,9facet

Prism Rotation

Effects Wheel

Gobo Animation Wheel

Iris

Lamp Shut off, fixture reset

Remote patching channel

Control

]]>

Moving lights are controlled in many ways. Usually the fixtures are connected to a Lighting control console, which outputs a control signal. This control signal sends data to the fixture usually in one of three ways: Analogue (which has largely been phased out), DMX (which is the industry standard control protocol), or Ethernet Control (which is still in development). The fixture then takes this signal and translates it into internal signals which are sent to the many stepper motors located inside.

XLR connectors, the most common method of controlling moving heads. Note that these are 3-pin XLR connectors, which are used by some manufacturers, rather than the 5-pin, which specified by the USITT DMX-512 Standard.

The vast majority of moving heads are controlled using the DMX protocol, usually using dedicated twisted pair, shielded cable with 5-pin XLR connectors at the ends. Each fixture is assigned a block of DMX channels in one of the venue’s DMX universes (a self-contained set of cables and fixtures which can operate a maximum of 512 individual channels). The central lighting desk transmits data on these channels which the intelligent fixture interprets as value settings for each of its many variables, including color, pattern, focus, prism, pan (horizontal swing), tilt (vertical swing), rotation speed, and animation.

Since moving heads did not attain prominence until DMX’s predecessor, analogue, had passed the zenith of its popularity, very few moving heads use analogue control (this is also due to crippling restrictions on bandwidth, data transfer speeds and potential inaccuracy). Some of the most modern intelligent fixtures use RJ-45 or Ethernet cabling for data transfer, due to the increased bandwidth available to control increasingly complicated effects. Using the new Ethernet technology, control surfaces are now able to control a much larger array of automated fixtures. Because many devices can be connected to a single RJ-45 network, these devices have the ability to not only listen to a control signal from a lighting control board, but have the ability to transmit information back to the control board and other entities on the network. Now, it is possible for a fixture to self-diagnose any problems, announce itself on a network, or accept setting changes from any place on the network, making obsolete older versions of the system that only had one central brain, the lighting control board. Because RJ-45 (and equivalent technologies) use bidirectional digital communication, bit-checking abilities allow for lighting control networks to safely operate devices that can interfere with human saftey (pyrotechnic devices, rigging mechanisms, etc.).

Moving lights are programmed using a fixture box in ETC light boards

Moving lights are much more difficult to program than their analogue cousins because they have more attributes per fixture that must be controlled. A simple conventional lighting fixture uses only one channel of control per unit: intensity. Everything else that the light must do is preset by human hands (color, position, focus, etc.) An automated lighting fixture can have as many as 30 of these control channels. A slew of products are available on the market to allow operators and programmers to easily control all of these channels on multiple fixtures. Lighting boards

He was one of three children born to parents Irene and Harry Daltrey, and grew up with two sisters, Gillian and Carol. Harry Daltrey worked for a water closet manufacturer, and Irene Daltrey was told she would be unable to have children because of losing a kidney in 1937. Nevertheless, she went into labour during a World War II air raid and gave birth to her son at the nearby Hammersmith Hospital, West London. At the age of three, the young Roger swallowed a rusty nail which had to be surgically removed, leaving a visible scar. At the age of five,

the rust from the nail caused an ulcer in his stomach which required him to be hospitalised.

Daltrey attended Victoria Primary School and then Acton County Grammar School

for boys along with Pete Townshend and John Entwistle. He showed academic promise in the English state school system, ranking at the top of his class on the eleven plus examination that led to his enrollment at the Acton County Grammar School. His parents hoped he would eventually continue on to study at the university, but Daltrey turned out to be a self-described “school rebel” and developed a dedicated interest in the emerging rock and roll music scene instead.

He made his first guitar from a block of wood and formed a skiffle band called The Detours. When his father bought him an Epiphone guitar in 1959, he became the lead guitarist for the band and soon afterward was expelled from school for smoking. Describing the post-war times, Pete Townshend wrote in his autobiography, “Until he was expelled, Roger had been a good pupil. Then he heard Elvis and transmogrified into a Teddy Boy with an electric guitar and a dress-sneer. Was it simply rock roll? It was obvious to a young man as intelligent as Roger that there was no future in conforming any more.”

Daltrey became a sheet metal worker during the day, while practicing and performing nights with the band at weddings, pubs and men’s clubs. He invited schoolmate John Entwistle to play bass in the band, and on the advice of Entwistle, invited Pete Townshend to play guitar. At that time, the band consisted of Daltrey on lead guitar, Pete Townshend on rhythm guitar, John Entwistle on bass, Doug Sandom on Drums and Colin Dawson on lead vocals. After Colin Dawson left the band, Daltrey switched to vocals and played harmonica as well, while Townshend became the lead guitarist. In 1964 drummer Doug Sandom left the band, eventually being replaced by Keith Moon. Daltrey continued to occasionally play guitar in performances with The Who, though much more frequently in later years than in the early years of the band.

Early on, Daltrey was the band’s leader, earning a reputation for using his fists to exercise control when needed, despite his small stature (his height is reportedly 5 feet 7 inches (1.70 m)). According to Townshend, Roger “ran things the way he wanted. If you argued with him, you usually got a bunch of fives.” He generally selected the music they performed, including songs by The Beatles, various Motown artists, James Brown, and other rock standards.

In 1964 the group discovered another band working as The Detours and discussed changing their name. Pete Townshend suggested “The Hair” and Townshend’s roommate Richard Barnes suggested “The Who.” The next morning, Daltrey made the decision for the band, saying “It’s The Who, innit?”

During 1964, band manager Peter Meaden renamed the band The High Numbers as part of a move to establish the band as Mod favourites. The name was a reference to the T-shirts with “numbers” that the Mods used at the time. Pete Meaden composed Mod songs for them (in fact, the songs were almost copies of Mod hits at the time, with changed lyrics) and they released one single, “I’m The Face/Zoot Suit”, on Fontana Records. The single was unsuccessful.

After Kit Lambert and Chris Stamp discovered The High Numbers at the Railway Hotel, the band quickly changed their name back to The Who, since neither Lambert nor Stamp liked the name “The High Numbers”.

The Who years

With the band’s first hit single and record deal in early 1965, Townshend began writing original material and Daltrey’s dominance of the band began to decline.

Because of the shifting dynamics of control within the group, the other members of The Who expelled Daltrey from the band in late 1965, after beating drummer Keith Moon up for supplying drugs to Townshend and Entwhistle, causing him to examine his methods of dealing with people. A week later, Daltrey was admitted back to the band, but was told he’d be on probation. He promised there would be no more violent outbursts or assaults. Daltrey recalled, “I thought if I lost the band I was dead. If I didn’t stick with The Who, I would be a sheet metal worker for the rest of my life.”

The band’s second single, “Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere” was the only song on which Daltrey and Townshend collaborated, and Daltrey only wrote two other songs for the band. As Townshend developed into one of rock’s most accomplished composers, Daltrey’s vocals became the vehicle through which Townshend’s visions were expressed, and he gained an equally vaunted reputation as a powerful vocalist and riveting frontman. The Who’s stage act was highly energetic, and Daltrey’s habit of swinging the microphone around by its cord on stage became his signature move.

Daltrey, with microphone, and Townshend, on stage

Daltrey’s stuttering expression of youthful anger, frustration and arrogance in the band’s breakthrough single, “My Generation”, captured the revolutionary feeling of the 1960s for many young people around the world and became the band’s trademark. Later, his scream near the end of “Won’t Get Fooled Again” became a defining moment in rock and roll. (Note: The stuttering was initially made by Pete Townshend on the demo for “My Generation” as a way of expressing the rapid-fire speech of the Mods at the time. Daltrey followed the demo faithfully in this regard.)

In October 1973, Townshend was at a low point after struggling through the rock opera Lifehouse and Quadrophenia projects, and Daltrey was experiencing success with his solo projects and acting roles. Daltrey had quite a bit of free time while others of the band worked on recording the music for Quadrophenia, and he used some of this time to check The Who’s books. He found they had fallen into disarray under the management of Kit Lambert and Chris Stamp. Kit Lambert was also Pete Townshend’s artistic mentor and challenging him led to renewed tension within the band. During a filming session (in an incident that Daltrey claimed was overblown) Townshend and Daltrey argued over the schedule. Townshend whacked the singer over the head with his guitar and Daltrey responded by knocking Townshend unconscious, again with a single blow.

With each of The Who’s milestone achievements, Tommy, Who’s Next, and Quadrophenia, Daltrey was the face and voice of the band as they defined themselves as the ultimate rebels in a generation of change. When Ken Russell’s adaptation of Tommy appeared as a feature film in 1975, Daltrey played the lead role and was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for “Best Acting Debut in a Motion Picture”. Afterward, Daltrey worked with Russell again, starring as Franz Liszt in Lisztomania. He worked with Rick Wakeman on the soundtrack to this film, writing the lyrics to three songs and also performing these, as well as others.

Daltrey with Pete Townshend

The Who went on after the death of Keith Moon in 1978, but tension continued as Daltrey felt new drummer Kenney Jones was the wrong choice for The Who. In 1980 Daltrey completed a major project for The Who Films, Ltd., a dramatic film called McVicar about U.K. bank robber John McVicar. Daltrey produced and starred in the film, and completed a striking soundtrack with other members of the band. This success, along with other stresses, contributed to a deterioration of relations with Townshend, and The Who retired from active touring in 1982 when Townshend felt he was no longer able to write for the band. The band continued to work together sporadically, reuniting for the Live Aid concert and recording songs for Daltrey’s solo album Under a Raging Moon and Townshend’s solo album Iron Man.

Daltrey turned to working as an actor, completing such high profile projects as The Beggar’s Opera and The Comedy of Errors for the BBC. He also appeared in several film, television and stage productions during this period, including Mike Batt’s The Hunting of the Snark (1987), The Little Match Girl (1987), Buddy’s Song (1990), which he also produced, and Mack the Knife (1990). In 1991 he received a Grammy Award with The Chieftains for An Irish Evening: Live at the Grand Opera House, Belfast.

The Who returned in 1989 with their 25th anniversary tour, which was also the 20th anniversary tour of the rock opera Tommy. The tour featured a large backing band and guest appearances by Steve Winwood, Patti LaBelle, Phil Collins and Elton John. Although Daltrey experienced life-threatening health problems, he managed to complete the tour. He continued to work on stage and screen during this period, completing projects such as The Wizard of Oz in Concert: Dreams Come True (1995) appearing as the Tin Woodman alongside Nathan Lane, Joel Grey, Natalie Cole, and Jewel Kilcher as Dorothy. During this time, he also began to appear in U.S. television shows.

In 1994 Daltrey celebrated his 50th birthday by performing a two-night spectacular at Carnegie Hall called A

She started playing Beatles covers at local bars and busking with her guitar teacher, Michael Meldrum, at the age of nine.

In 1989, DiFranco started her own record company, Righteous Records (renamed Righteous Babe Records in 1994). Prior to the renaming of Righteous Records to Righteous Babe Records, DiFranco worked with manager Dale Anderson, a writer for the Buffalo News, who started another record label called Hot Wings Records after the two parted ways.

Hot Wings released the work of Buffalo area female musical performers with styles similar to that of DiFranco.

Early releases of her CDs produced prior to 1994 are labeled with the original Righteous Records label.
Her self-titled debut album was issued on the label in the winter of 1990.
Later, she relocated to New York City, where she took poetry classes at The New School and toured vigorously.

DiFranco identifies herself as bisexual, and has written songs about love and sex with both genders.
She addressed the controversy about her sexuality with the song “In or Out”. In 1998, she married sound engineer Andrew Gilchrist in a Unitarian Universalist service in Canada, overseen by U.U. minister and renowned folk singer Utah Phillips[citation needed]. Numerous media sources reported that her fans felt betrayed by her union with a man. DiFranco and Gilchrist divorced five years later.

In 1998, DiFranco’s drummer, Andy Stochansky, left the band to pursue a solo career as a singer-songwriter. Their rapport during live shows is showcased on the 1997 album Living in Clip.

DiFranco’s father died early in the summer of 2004. In July 2005, DiFranco developed tendonitis and took a hiatus from touring. DiFranco had toured almost continuously in the preceding fifteen years, only taking brief breaks to record studio albums. Her 2005 tour concluded with an appearance at the FloydFest World Music and Genre Crossover festival in Floyd, Virginia. DiFranco returned to touring in late April 2006, including a performance at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival on April 28 and a performance at the renowned Calgary Folk Music Festival on July 30, 2006.

DiFranco gave birth to a daughter, Petah Lucia DiFranco Napolitano, at her Buffalo home on January 20, 2007. The child’s father is DiFranco’s new husband, Mike Napolitano, the co-producer of DiFranco’s 2006 release Reprieve. Essentially a full-time resident of New Orleans, DiFranco is heavily influenced by the city’s post-Katrina plight.

She has continued touring into 2008 with a backing band consisting of Todd Sickafoose on upright bass, Allison Miller on drums, and Mike Dillon on percussion and vibes. DiFranco returned to the Calgary Folk Music Festival in July 2008.

Napolitano and DiFranco wed in January 2009 in Hawaii.

Recognition

On July 21, 2006, DiFranco received the “Woman of Courage Award” at the National Organization for Women (NOW) Conference and Young Feminist Summit in Albany, New York. Past winners have included singer and actress Barbra Streisand and Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif. DiFranco is one of the first musicians to receive the award, given each year to a woman who has set herself apart by her contributions to the feminist movement.

DiFranco has been toasted by the Buffalo News as the “Buffalo’s leading lady of rock music.” The News further said:

“Through the Righteous Babe Foundation, DiFranco has backed various grassroots cultural and political organizations, supporting causes ranging from abortion rights to gay visibility.”

Since 2003, DiFranco has been nominated four consecutive times for Best Recording Package at the Grammy Awards, one of which she won, in 2004, for Educated Guess.

Musical style and the “folk” label

DiFranco’s guitar playing is often characterized by a signature staccato style, rapid fingerpicking and many alternate tunings. She delivers many of her lines in a speaking style notable for its rhythmic variation. Her lyrics, which often include alliteration, metaphor, word play and a more or less gentle irony, have also received praise for their sophistication.

Although DiFranco’s music has been classified as both folk rock and alternative rock, she has reached across genres since her earliest albums. DiFranco has collaborated with a wide range of artists including musician Prince, who recorded two songs with DiFranco in 1999: “Providence” on her To the Teeth album, and “I Love U, but I Don’t Trust U Anymore” on Prince’s Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic album: folk musician and social activist Utah Phillips (on The Past Didn’t Go Anywhere in 1996 and Fellow Workers in 1999), funk and soul jazz musician Maceo Parker and rapper Corey Parker. She has used a variety of instruments and styles: brass instrumentation was prevalent in 1998′s Little Plastic Castle, a simple walking bass in her 1997 cover of Hal David and Burt Bacharach’s “Wishin’ and Hopin’”, strings on the 1997 live album Living in Clip and 2004′s Knuckle Down, and electronics and synthesisers in 1999′s To the Teeth and in 2006′s Reprieve.

DiFranco herself noted that “folk music is not an acoustic guitar that’s not where the heart of it is. I use the word ‘folk’ in reference to punk music and rap music. It’s an attitude, it’s an awareness of one’s heritage, and it’s a community. It’s subcorporate music that gives voice to different communities and their struggle against authority.”

Lyrics, politics and religion

Although much of DiFranco’s material is autobiographical, it is often also strongly political. Many of her songs are concerned with contemporary social issues such as racism, sexism, sexual abuse, homophobia, reproductive rights, poverty, and war. The combination of personal and political is partially responsible for DiFranco’s early popularity among politically active college students, particularly those of the left wing, some of whom set up fan pages on the web to document DiFranco’s career as early as 1994. DiFranco’s rapid rise in popularity in the mid-1990s was fueled mostly by personal contact and word of mouth rather than mainstream media.

]]>

DiFranco has expressed political views outside of her music. During the 2000 U.S. presidential election, she actively supported and voted for Green Party candidate Ralph Nader. She supported Dennis Kucinich in the 2004 and 2008 Democratic primaries. Kucinich appeared with her at a number of concerts across the country during both primary seasons. DiFranco went on to perform at the 2008 Democratic National Convention.

Early in her career, DiFranco considered herself an atheist. On the subject of religion, DiFranco has stated:

“Well, I’m not a religious person myself. I’m an atheist. I think religion serves a lot of different purposes in people’s lives, and I can recognize the value of that, you know, the value of ceremony, the value of community, or even just having a forum to get together and talk about ideas, about morals that’s a cool concept. But then, of course, institutional religions are so problematic.”

Since becoming a mother and releasing her Red Letter Year album in 2009, DiFranco has talked in concert about “finding religion”. At concerts she has stated that her song “The Atom” is an “alternative Christian proposal”. In “The Atom” she sings h holy is the atom/ The truly intelligent design/ To which all of evolution/ Is graciously aligned. In Reno in 2008 prior to singing “The Atom”, she said “I’ve kind of gotten religion lately, I took a sweet religion, one I am sort of familiar with and sprayed a can of patriarchy-off and this is what I came up with.”

Label independence

Ownership of Righteous Babe Records allows DiFranco a great deal of artistic freedom. For example, on her 2004 album Educated Guess, DiFranco played all of the instruments, provided all of the vocals, and recorded the album by herself at her home on an analog 8-track reel to reel. She was also involved in much of the artwork and design for the packaging. The only other person involved in the record’s musical production was Greg Calbi, who mastered it.

References to her independence from major labels appear occasionally in DiFranco’s songs, including “The Million You Never Made” (Not A Pretty Girl), which discusses the act of turning down a lucrative contract, “The Next Big Thing” (Not So Soft), which describes an imagined meeting with a label head-hunter who evaluates the singer based on her looks, and “Napoleon” (Dilate), which sympathizes sarcastically with an unnamed friend who did sign with a label.

DiFranco has occasionally joined with Prince in discussing publicly the problems associated with major record companies. Righteous Babe Records employs a number of people in her hometown of Buffalo. In a 1997 open letter to Ms. magazine she expressed displeasure that what she considers a way to ensure her own artistic freedom was seen by others solely in terms of its financial success.

Recent work

On September 11, 2007, she released the first retrospective of her career, titled Canon and for the first time, a collection of poetry in a book titled Verses.

DiFranco’s album Reprieve was released on August 8, 2006. It was previously leaked on iTunes for several hours around July 1, 2006, due to an error saying it was released in 2002. DiFranco performed with Cyndi Lauper on “Sisters of Avalon”, a track from Lauper’s 2005 collection The Body Acoustic.

She also collaborated with fellow folk singer Dar Williams on “Comfortably

Roger Waters was the bass player, co-lead vocalist, lyricist, main songwriter, and 1 of the founding members of the rock band Pink Floyd. Following his departure from Pink Floyd in 1984 Waters began a solo career, releasing three studio albums. Roger Waters has toured extensively as a solo act considering that 1999 and played The Dark Side of the Moon in its entirety for his world tours of 2006-2008.

On 27 September 2005, right after 16 years of function, Waters released his opera Ça Ira. It was released as a CD/DVD set, with Baritone Bryn Terfel, soprano Ying Huang and tenor Paul Groves. The original libretto was written in French by the late Étienne Roda-Gil and his wife Nadine, who set the opera during the early French Revolution.
From 1997 Waters rewrote the libretto in English, and had this to say about the composition: “I’ve often been a big fan of Beethoven’s choral music, Berlioz and Borodin … This is unashamedly romantic and resides in that early 19th-century tradition, because that’s where my tastes lie in classical and choral music.” Waters appeared on television to discuss the opera, but the interviews usually focused instead on his relationship with Pink Floyd, something Waters would “take in stride”, a sign Mark Blake believes to be “a testament to his mellower old age or twenty years of dedicated psychotherapy.

Waters’ manager Mark Fenwick has confirmed that Roger Waters will tour The Wall. The tour dates had been announced on 12 April 2010. The name of the tour is Roger Waters: The Wall Live. Roger Waters Tickets are offered on Sold Out Ticket Market place at nominal rates.

There has been considerably deliberation as to which band had turn into the true founder’s of the punk movement, but both bands began coming into their own in 1976.

A new wave of music hit society. The message was clear that the individualistic tendencies of teens would be encouraged and that music, poetry and showmanship ruled over mainstream thought. In fact, the Sex Pistols didn’t care what people thought. Lead singer John Lydon was founded by (mis) manager Malcom McLaren in McLaren’s clothing shop, supporting a hacked up, green haircut, leather jacket and homemade “I HATE Pink Floyd” shirt, regarded as Sacrilege at the time.
He sounded like no one else, and had a style of dance all on his own, but the band knew at that time, they had discovered their lead man. They initial started out playing anywhere that would take them, but with style being some thing that could get you into significant trouble, they were usually locating themselves in physical danger. They usually had to physically fight their way back to their van after their show had been unplugged. It took a even though, and everywhere the Pistols would play the audience just didn’t “get it”, but they soon attracted like-minded people and began a modest following. Some of these individuals included Susan Dallion (aka Siouxsie Sioux) and William Broad (aka Billy Idol).

]]>

After getting sacked by two distinct record labels: EMI who had to let them go soon after a foul-mouthed interview with ‘Today’ Tv show host Bill Grundy, where they dropped the F bomb even though had been warned the show would be aired live all through London, and right after only 10 days of becoming on the A&ampM label getting dropped soon after a drunken office party became out of manage. They lost Glen Matlock (bassist), due to indifference with front man John “Rotten” Lydon. Rotten discovered this to be a fantastic opportunity to bring in his old friend John Simon Ritchie/Beverly, an early Pistols fan, who would later be recognized as Sid Vicious. Sid could not play the bass, but his power would be loved by their fans. By this time they had been at war with the public, due to their controversial song ‘God Save The Queen’.

They reluctantly signed with Richard Branson’s Virgin records following a lengthy head hunt. With their ‘God Save The Queen’ hitting so high in the charts, (but by no means hit #1 due to protest, they stayed at #two even though they technically had out-sold the Number 1 record of the week – ‘The First Cut is the Deepest’ by Rod Stewart a blatant conspiracy) they were outcasts to the public other, than the “punks” and few supporting reporters.

Unfazed and continuing to shock audiences with lyrics and stage presence, their subsequent album released in 1977 the album ‘Never Thoughts The Bollocks’ was released with the two hit singles ‘Pretty Vacant’ (July) and ‘Holidays in the Sun’ (October). Pre-Release orders were so high, the album quickly hit Number 1, and was now considered one of the greatest albums ever. This record was usually imitated but never ever surpassed. “Punk Rock” had hit a new high. With the Pistols in their black leather jackets and punk rock hairstyles, they had been leading the new wave of listeners and a generation of “Do It For Themselves”.

The Sex Pistols would continue to shock and rock with audiences for fairly some time. They helped pave the way for younger generations, giving youth a very essential identity and outlet for expression. They opened up the music market like a tin can, flipped it upside down and walked away. This was truly helping pave the way for indie music to reign supreme and let record businesses know that the music industry was in for a big alter.

In 1939, Alex Steinweiss was employed at Columbia Records as the first art director for the firm and decided to spruce up and repackage vinyl records. We all know the result, album cover art has turn out to be an crucial component of music and pop culture. (Prior to Steinweiss’s creative influences, records were usually stored in plain, undecorated packaging)

For collectors, album cover art can sometimes be as useful as the vinyl record it holds. For instance, one of the most famous album covers of all time, the Beatles “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” cover was one of the most inventive at the time and included cut out inserts and lyrics. The price 1 would pay for a copy of this album is influenced by no matter whether or not it has the original contents and they are intact.
There are a lot of album covers that included posters of the band as well and other “perks” for the buyer and all these elements factor into the resale cost and collectiblity.

&#13

There have been several dynamic and world-famous album covers. Contemplate the Beatles’ album “Yesterday…and Today” (1966), also referred to as the “butcher block album” because the Beatles had been pictured on the front cover wearing white butcher coats surrounded by bloody meat and cut up dolls. The album was speedily pulled by Capitol Records following the company received many complaints from reviewers and DJ’s. The firm recalled the concern and ordered a new cover but did not want to waste the several hundred thousand that had already been printed. Capitol then hired component-time helpers to eliminate that photo from the cover and paste on the new photo for the cover. But, it appears that there were several lazy employees and to save time, they just pasted the new cover on top of the old cover and the 1 that was supposed to be removed. The result is 3 diverse versions of that specific album and a collector’s dream, the diverse versions of the album are worth numerous thousand dollars (costs vary-check a record price guide to ascertain precisely what album you may have to get the precise price).

]]>

&#13

&#13

Album cover art has also spawned numerous internet sites in which to view renowned covers and designs, readers’ favorites and leading ten lists. One such site, www.superseventies.com offers a comprehensive look at some of the most well-known covers from the 1970′s such as the Sex Pistols “Never Mind The Bollocks,” the Eagles “Hotel California,” Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side Of The Moon” and the Rolling Stones’ “Sticky Fingers” among other people. Moreover, www.superseventies.com provides their reader’s favorite seventies album covers (far more than 300) with detailed descriptions and reviews of each distinct release. This is a excellent way to spend a rainy day, as you discover some of the greatest album cover art of the 70′s.

&#13

Album cover design is an art form and enables the musicians higher manage more than the content and another crucial avenue in which to express themselves. In my humble opinion (and I share this opinion with countless others), with the advent of the CD, the music acquiring public lost a national treasure, album cover art. It is part of pop culture and recorded music in general. Sure, Cd’s supply you a “stripped down” version of the original cover art, but it certainly pales in comparison to the real thing. I am confident Mr. Steinweiss would totally agree with me.

These seven albums I would use as my evidence if I was presenting such an argument. Maybe that is specifically the argument I am presenting? Amazingly 4 of the seven albums I’m which includes in my list are debut albums by some of the most legendary bands in history of rock music. I feel that is a excellent indication of just what a breakthrough year 1967 really was. Who are those 4 bands? Pink Floyd (who were known as The Pink Floyd at the time), The Velvet Underground, The Doors, and The Jimi Hendrix Experience. Pretty wonderful, is not it? These wonderful albums are listed by their title alphabetically. It was tough enough to choose just seven “must hear” albums from 1967 (as there are surely more than that) so I wasn’t about to attempt and order them in any way other than by the
alphabet! Completely Free of charge by The Mothers of Invention (Frank Zappa) – This album could be looked at as merely a “joke” (and sadly many individuals do dismiss Zappa’s music as just that) but the music is just too very good to be dismissed in that sort of way. This is a fantastic album for any individual who thinks that 1967 was only about “flower power.” Zappa brought the weird with force, but he also brought sophistication and complexity. The music on Totally Free often referenced Stravinsky and other classical music. Are You Experienced? by The Jimi Hendrix Expertise – This was Hendrix’s debut album and what a way to start off a career. It included the classic Hendrix tracks “Foxy Lady,” “Manic Depression,” &amp “Red House” (these are really the first 3 songs on the album) along with “Fire” and of course the title track. While I do not think it’s his very best album, it is surely a excellent album. Certainly 1 of the seven “ought to hear” albums of 1967. The Doors by The Doors – This is the band’s debut. It was recorded in 1966 and released in January of ’67. It includes some of the band’s most nicely identified like “Break On By means of (To the Other Side)”, “The Crystal Ship,” “Light My Fire,” &amp “The End.” Several fans &amp critics consider it to be The Doors finest album. Magical Mystery Tour by The Beatles – Certainly not the masterpiece that Sgt. Pepper is, hell it wasn’t even really an album but an EP. But so what? It still contains a whole lot of amazing songs like “I Am The Walrus” &amp “The Fool on the Hill,” &amp “Baby You are a Wealthy Man.” Piper at the Gates of Dawn by The Pink Floyd – This was Pink Floyd before they got rid of Syd Barrett (due to his mental problems and erratic behavior) and the The at the beginning of their name. In some ways they had been a completely diverse band than the one that would grow to be hugely well-known in the 1970s with Dark Side of the Moon. But even though they do sound extremely diverse, the seeds for the ’70s Pink Floyd can be heard in this album which is brilliant in it’s own appropriate. If you are a fan of psychedelic music then this album definitely crucial. Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band by The Beatles – Occasionally individuals say Sgt. Pepper is “overrated.” I say nonsense! Any album that contains songs as wonderful as “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds,” “With a Little Assist From My Pals,” &amp “A Day in the Life” cannot be overrated. It was a large step forward for The Beatles, not so much in that the songs had been much better or even more complicated (listen to Revolver after all) but because the songs all fit together in a new way. Sgt. Pepper was the arrival of the album as “art” and not just a collection of songs. To me it nonetheless stands up as an extraordinary function of art nowadays. The Velvet Underground &amp Nico by The Velvet Underground wasn’t a massive commercial success but it is arguably the most influential album on this list. It consists of “Sunday Morning,” “I’m Waiting for the Man,” &amp “Heroin” among its 11 tracks.
